Are you a sneaker head?… If you obsess, collect, trade or admire kicks, you can officially refer to yourself as a sneaker head. The sneaker culture has been around since the 1930’s when ‘sand shoes’ now known as Plimsolls came along. It has evolved throughout the years and today we have more variety than ever before. The evolution really started with Micheal Jordan in 1985, when his custome Jordans sneaker became a ‘must have’ illustrating ones solidarity to his/hers favourite sport or player, coupled with the hip-hop culture that gave it the ‘street cred’ this turning point made sneakers a multi-gazillion dollar industry we see today, as we continue our obsession with awesome looking kicks, there is a style for every occasion.
CLASSIC MUST HAVES
Classic kicks are those that have stood the test of time, we grew up wearing them, and we continue to replenish out wardrobes with same shoes. Classics are worm till they are utterly tired and we always get a fresh pair ever so often. I call the sneaker staples one should not live without. They have been styled in many different ways, some folks theme their weddings or parties around these shoes, and you can pretty much wear them with anything in your wardrobe.
Following on the legacy of Micheal Jodan’s basketball shoe success, there has been many collaborations between sneaker makers and celebrities. From a business point of view, these are mega money generators, and for the collectors it is an opportunity to own a limited edition piece that will remind future generations of the era we once existed in. Here are my current favourite collabo’s.
The customizing culture is gaining momentum in South Africa, last week we saw a sneaker customizing exhibition in PTA. see article ( http://mg.co.za/multimedia/2015-03-16-sneaker-culture-on-the-rise ). This subculture allows creative expression, making your shoe exclusive to only you. It is also a good business opportunity. The big sneaker companies like Converse and Adidas have customizing services within their retails spaces. (saw this in NYC, not sure if its done in SA yet). See how you can get started with customizing your own kicks ( http://sneakers.about.com/od/howtocustomizesneakers/ss/Customizesneaks_6.htm#step-heading )
MATSELA’S MUST HAVES
I’m am obsessed with these shoes, these will be a great addition to any fashionista’s shoes collection.
High end luxury designers, refuse to be left behind. In recent years we’ve seen luxury brands venture into the sneaker market, and as I mentioned before, the variety is endless, even the super brand conscious luxury market can now participate in what used to be known or associated with street-style subculture.
What’s your go-to sneakers? Let us know on the comment line.
